Big news from Čuvar! Dave Mackintosh has officially stepped into the role of Senior Winemaker, following Michelle Richardson. He’s been with us since January, but now it’s official – and we’re really excited to have Dave permanently join the team.

Dave grew up in Hawke’s Bay and knows the region’s vineyards and soils like few others. His winemaking adventures have taken him from Burgundy and Oregon to the Hunter and Yarra Valleys, where he created his own labels – Arfion, and Kenzie. Known for his creativity, charisma, and minimal-intervention style, Dave’s all about letting the vineyard and seasons do the talking. Oh, and he’s an artist too – so expect more imagination and storytelling from us. Dave will be hands-on in the winery and out sharing the Čuvar story with customers.

Čuvar, meaning “guardian” in Croatian, was founded by Sir George Fistonich to honour the pioneers who shaped New Zealand wine. Today we carry that legacy forward, crafting wines of purity and pedigree with respect for land, people, and heritage.

Karen Fistonich, Executive Director of Fistonich Family Vineyards, says:
“Dave embodies everything we value at Čuvar – respect for the land, authenticity, and creativity. His knowledge of Hawke’s Bay’s vineyards and soils, combined with his global perspective and engaging personality, make him the perfect fit for our future.”

And from Dave himself:
“I’m excited to craft wines that tell the story of Hawke’s Bay – its seasons, its soils, its people – and to build on the incredible foundation laid by Michelle and the Fistonich Family.”
