It’s hard to believe a year has passed since Čuvar Winery launched—a vision brought to life by the legendary Sir George Fistonich. Čuvar is not only a business venture but a tribute to the Croatian pioneers and others who shaped New Zealand’s wine heritage. This winery embodies a legacy of passion, innovation, and care for the land, rooted in Sir George’s commitment to preserving New Zealand’s wine story.
Reflecting on our journey over the past year, we’re proud to celebrate the milestones achieved under the leadership of Sir George and Executive Director Karen Fistonich. Together, they have guided Čuvar towards its founding vision: crafting wines that honour tradition and reflect our commitment to excellence.
Our success, however, would not be possible without the skill, dedication, and passion of our incredible team. Their years of expertise and unwavering commitment have helped Čuvar achieve these milestones in such a short time, and we’re truly grateful for their efforts every step of the way.
Some highlights from Čuvar’s first year:
- Launching with a beautiful wine media lunch at Cibo Auckland on October 30th, 2023.
- Gaining international recognition, with coverage from Decanter, The World, Listener, NZ Herald, Viva, North & South, Mindfood, The Real Review, and more.
- Expanding distribution in New Zealand’s fine wine stores and top-tier restaurants.
- Breaking into export markets like Japan and Singapore, with further growth on the horizon.
- Dedicated efforts in our vineyards to enhance soil health, sustainability, and fruit quality.
- Celebrating our first award season with Gold and Silver medals at the Bayley’s Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards, New Zealand International Wine Awards, and The National Wine Awards of Aotearoa, along with numerous 5-star reviews from highly respected wine critics like Michael Cooper, Cameron Douglas, and Sam Kim.
As we look forward, we remain committed to pushing boundaries, honouring our heritage, and creating wines that reflect the best of New Zealand’s terroir.
Here’s to the journey ahead and to all who have been part of this memorable first year!
